Fluency

Fluency is extremely important to your child's reading. Fluent reading involves reading at a good rate as well as changing reading rate to suit what is being read.  Your child needs to read with expression and with appropriate phrasing.

A list of things you can do to promote fluency:

1.  Help your child select a book that is familiar to the child and not too difficult to read independently.

2.  Demonstrate good fluency by reading aloud to your child.

3.  Have your child read a short passage after you have modeled reading the passage fluently.  Do this repeatedly until the book is completed.

4.  Read a page of text and have your child read the next page after your demonstration of fluent reading.
