CHS Named Palmetto’s Finest Runner-up
CLOVER — Clover High School fell short for the second consecutive year in its quest to be named Palmetto’s Finest. Chapin High School edged CHS and St. James High School for this year’s award.
While the result was not what students and school officials hoped for there is much to celebrate, and district leaders are very complimentary of the continued efforts of the school’s faculty and staff who work daily to prepare nearly 2,000 students to be college and career ready.
One of the most coveted and respected awards among educators in South Carolina, Palmetto’s Finest schools are offering the best innovative and effective educational programs. CHS was selected as a finalist last year; Camden High School in Kershaw County won the award in 2014.
CHS faculty and staff strive daily to prepare each student for a productive future and to make all graduates career and college ready. This goal is being realized as evidenced by the school’s four-year graduation rate, which has climbed 15 points to 89.1% over the past four years. End of Course tests and High School Assessment Program test passing rates have also consistently risen during the same time span.
Additionally, CHS has received the Palmetto Gold award in General Performance for four consecutive years, Palmetto Silver for Closing The Achievement Gap in 2012, and Palmetto Gold for Closing the Achievement Gap in 2014.
Presented by the SC Association of School Administrators (SCASA), the school progressed through an intensive application process requiring self-evaluation, peer review and on-site examinations. Student achievement is the foundation for all award criteria.
The last school in York County to be recognized as a Palmetto’s Finest school is Rock Hill Schools’ Independence Elementary which won in 2005. Northwestern High School, which took the award in 2001, is the only area high school to ever receive the top honor.
The Palmetto’s Finest Award is celebrating its 37th year.
