The History Behind Our Name
Liberty Hill Elementary School proudly carries a name rooted in the rich history of York County and the American Revolution. Our school was named in honor of a Revolutionary War battle that took place on this very site on June 18, 1780.
During the Revolutionary War, Colonel William “Billy” Hill and Isaac Hayne operated Hill’s Iron Works at this location. Using iron from nearby Nanny’s Mountain, they manufactured cannons, ammunition, and swords to support the colonists in their fight for independence from British rule.
In June 1780, a group known as the “Patriots of York County” gathered at Hill’s Iron Works and pledged to fight for American independence. On June 18, 1780, British forces attacked and destroyed the iron works. Isaac Hayne was captured and later released, while Colonel Hill escaped and continued the fight for independence, participating in a battle at Brattonsville just four weeks later.
Following the Revolutionary War, Colonel Hill continued serving his community. He became a judge in York County and was the first senator to represent York County in the South Carolina legislature. Throughout his career, he served multiple terms in both the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate.
Colonel Hill is buried in Bethel Cemetery. In 1958, local schoolchildren honored his legacy by raising funds to place a marker at his gravesite—a meaningful example of young people preserving their community's history.
Honoring Our Past. Inspiring Our Future.
Today, Liberty Hill Elementary School proudly honors this history through our Patriot identity. Just as the Patriots of York County demonstrated courage, determination, and a commitment to their community, we encourage our students to lead with character, demonstrate perseverance, and make a positive difference.
Our school's name is more than a connection to history. It is a reminder of the values that continue to shape our community and inspire future generations.
Rooted in Community. Driven by Excellence.
