Every year, Air Force JROTC cadets write an essay for the Veterans of Foreign War “Voice of Democracy” competition in hopes of winning a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships. Their graded essays count as a quarterly project. This year's topic was "Why I'm Optimistic about Our Nation's Future."

Mr. John Hill, Commander of Clover’s VFW Post and the VFW Post members reviewed the essays. Cadet Madeleine Burrell’s (pictured on the far left) is the first place winner and she received a $100 check from the VFW. The second place winner Cadet Caitlin Bowman (pictured in the middle) received $75 and Cadet Meredith Sutton (pictured on the far right)  received the $50 check for third place.

Along with receiving a gift, Cadet Burrell’s essay was chosen to be the District Representative for York County. Her essay will compete statewide for the next step of the process. We wish her the best of luck in the State competition!
