Students at Bethany Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday all week. We read many Dr. Seuss books and participated in many fun and engaging activities. Some of our activities included: cooking, eating, and reading Green Eggs and Ham, wearing pajamas and reading Dr. Suess’ Sleep Book, reading Fox in Sox while wearing silly socks, dressing as our favorite storybook characters, hosting guest readers, voting on favorite books and making graphs, and wearing wacky clothes while reading Wacky Wednesday. On Friday, we had a read-a-thon as we participated in Accelerated Reader’s “Read the Most from Coast to Coast.” Bethany students joined with students across America to beat last year’s record of AR quizzes passed in one day -- 3,581,992. At 2:52 PM that record was broken and the counter continued until 11:59 PM on the west coast at which time boys and girls from coast to coast had taken and passed 4,409,622 quizzes! Bethany contributed 1,761 quizzes to the record!
Bethany’s first ever LEGO Robotics team competed in the State Championship against 80 teams at White Knoll High School in Lexington, SC on Saturday, February 23. The Bethany Bot Builders (B3) is made up of 10 fifth graders who have worked very hard since the beginning of September. This year’s theme was “Senior Solutions- Keeping Senior Citizens Independent, Engaged, and Connected.” The competition was divided into four parts: the robot game, the technical design of the robot, core values, and a research project. Each team had three presentations and interviews along with three trial runs where students tried to complete missions with a robot they built and programmed. The Bethany Bot Builders did great in each part of the competition and were awarded 2nd place for their project research. We are very proud of our team!
