Clover High School's Associate Director of Bands and Lake Wylie High School's future Director of Bands Anne Lewis Turner was named the 2026 Outstanding Young Music Educator by the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA).
The award was presented Friday during the organization's Professional Development Conference in Columbia.
Candidates are nominated anonymously for this award, and nominations are supported by confidential letters of recommendation.
One nomination letter stated:
“Ms. Turner is one of the most promising music educators in South Carolina. Though she is in only her fifth year of teaching, she demonstrates the skills of a seasoned educator. She has taught at Great Falls Middle/High School and served as a graduate assistant at Winthrop University before beginning her work in the Clover School District. Ms. Turner works with the Clover High School Band, Clover Middle School, and Oak Ridge Middle School, and also teaches and manages a World Class WGI Percussion Ensemble.
Her commitment and drive consistently push students to new heights. Ms. Turner is known for her outstanding pedagogy, strong instincts, and ability to connect with students in meaningful ways. She is a dedicated, detail-oriented educator with exceptional communication and leadership skills, a strong work ethic, and a passion for innovative and individualized teaching. She excels in curriculum development, ensemble direction, and administrative coordination within music programs.”
Another letter, written by a current student, shared:
“Mrs. Turner has been an amazing music educator over my past five years in the Clover High School Band. She consistently shows patience and empathy while helping students learn difficult music. I have seen her rewrite and adapt music to ensure every student can be challenged and successful. She takes the time to break music down note by note until everyone understands, and she remains patient regardless of how long it takes for students to master a passage.”
An additional recommendation noted:
“Anne’s work ethic is unmatched. She approaches every rehearsal, class, and performance with professionalism and diligence. She is a true team player who supports her colleagues while also serving as a natural leader. Anne has a unique ability to navigate difficult conversations with grace and fairness, fostering collaboration and growth. Her influence extends beyond Clover, contributing meaningfully to instrumental music education throughout South Carolina and nationally through her involvement in the WGI circuits.”
