CSD Science teachers will have access to new technology tools as the result of a successful grant application. The grant aims to provide access to Gizmos and Science4Us, two science interactive simulations created by Explore Learning. These simulations support teaching and learning by incorporating the 5E Model of instruction (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), enhancing literacy in science and developing skills in analyzing and creating graphs and charts. Gizmos and Science4Us provide interactive simulations and engaging content that aligns with the new science performance expectations. This allows students to explore complex concepts in a meaningful way. With these interactive simulations, CSD aims to strengthen students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills while fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. The grant was written by CSD Science Instructional Specialist Dr. Jocelyn Gordon.

Clover Middle School's chapter of the FFA has been awarded $5,000 in the Grants for Growing program. Grants for Growing is a nationwide project sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and provides grants to local FFA chapters to support the development or improvement of agricultural education projects that enhance the classroom experiences for students through chapter engagement activities. Clover Middle FFA plans to use this money for creating a community show box, including a livestock trailer. CMS students will have the opportunity to explore the world of livestock showing without having to make huge financial purchases, especially during their first year. Grant money will be used toward purchasing a livestock trailer and other items, like livestock equipment and common medicines typically needed when raising livestock. The grant program provided over $900,000 to FFA chapters in 47 states. Funding is provided through consumer donations made during checkout at a Tractor Supply Company store by purchasing a $1 FFA paper emblem. The fundraising period aligns with National FFA Week in February.

Oakridge Middle welcomed Boston Dynamics “Spot” the robot on Friday, August 30. Mr. Casey Roberts who works with Duke Energy as a Technology Development Manager brought this working robot and presented to 7th grade classes. Students learned about all the work Duke Energy does as well as how new innovations such as “Spot” are reshaping the way energy is delivered throughout the state. This was coordinated through OMS Project Lead the Way classes taught by instructor Jackie Osterhout.

Oakridge Middle School's soccer team is demonstrating how "the little town with LOVE in the middle" is leaving a legacy around the world. Last spring, the men's and women's teams conducted the "Battle of the Bird's Nest"--a Savannah Bananas-style take on a soccer match. The match featured rule changes, guest players and a halftime show. The event raised more than $2,000. Those funds were used to purchase home and away soccer uniforms for children at an orphanage in Guaimaca, Honduras. The uniforms were delivered to the children just before the start of the new CSD school year.

Eighth graders at Oakridge Middle School (OMS) learned about high-demand careers in trade industries today, thanks to a mobile classroom. The "Be Pro Be Proud" truck was on the OMS campus today so that students could engage with various simulators to try out their skills in these career fields. Sample careers included welder, truck driver, fork lift operator, excavator operator, plumber and utility line worker. The "Be Pro Be Proud" truck is a public-private partnership that brings together several professional organizations to teach students about their industries. Partners include the SC Trucking Association, SC Chamber of Commerce, Carolinas Association of General Contractors (AGC), Forestry Association of SC, Homebuilders Association of SC and the SC Department of Employment and Workforce. The "Be Pro Be Proud" truck continues its tour of the Palmetto State by making a stop at Clover High School on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
