Under a Lake Wylie High Schoo (LWHS)l blue sky, the last steel beam of the LWHS frame was lifted into place by a crane to the applause of the crowd on the ground.

Clover School District joined Contract Construction, Leitner Management Group and McMillan Pazdan Smith this morning for a "Topping Out" ceremony to celebrate the midpoint of construction of the new Lake Wylie High School. Footers were poured just one year ago, and construction is expected to be completed by next summer.

Jon Hattaway of Leitner Management Group served as emcee for the event. He noted that enough cement blocks had been placed to stretch to Columbia and back and that the steel in the frame would cover Allison Creek.

Superintendent Sheila Quinn said, "The only day that will be happier than today is the day when we cut the ribbon to dedicate this school to the children of the Clover School District and their education."

LWHS Principal Calub Courtwright called today "a proud and exciting occasion for our community." He said he was looking forward to LWHS being the place where students' potential was cultivated and realized.

Ryan Drafts, Construction Superintendent for Contract Construction, provided a project overview and noted that they would be making "a full-court press" on finishing the interior of the building.

Ben Thompson, Architect with McMillan Pazdan Smith, noted that his team worked on the designs five years ago now and strived to create a building that aligned with the district's instructional program. He called LWHS "a vision of what schools will look like in the future."

At the conclusion of remarks, guests were invited to sign the final beam that would complete the building's frame, leaving their mark on building. After a barbecue lunch--the first in the new school's cafeteria--guests moved outside to watch contractors lift the beam into position on the front of the school.

Are you ready for some football?

As the Clover High School Blue Eagles prepare to take the field tonight for their first home game of the season, CHS administrators want to remind you that they are adjusting entry gates to facilitate the new student ID requirement for high school students and the adult chaperone requirement for students without an ID.

There will be a gate on the home side of the field that is specifically for high school students. To enter through this gate, high school students must have proof that they are a high school student. While that gate is primarily for CHS students who have student IDs, students who are homeschooled or who attend another school and wish to attend WITHOUT their parents MUST provide proof that they are a high school student.

Young adults, such as recent graduates, should use the other gate and should be prepared to provide something to prove they are 18 or older.

Construction on CSD's new schools continues at a rapid pace as we turn the corner into fall.

The highest beam on Lake Wylie High School will be installed next week, and masons are installing the brick facade. Curbs, gutters and asphalt are going down, along with sod on the band and athletic fields. Sheetrock, casework and cabinetry will be the focus of work in the September to November timeframe.

Next door at Liberty Hill Elementary, all the slabs on grade have been poured, and metal roofing is being applied. The second floor is going up on what will be the district's first two-story elementary classroom wing.

Construction is now complete at the arts wing for Roosevelt Middle School.
Rooms in the arts wing are now sometimes used by the Clover High School Band program when they need an overflow space. Additional branding and fencing projects will be scheduled for later in the year.

Clover School District’s (CSD) top priority is the safety and security of all students and staff. For this reason, CSD is announcing new security measures at extracurricular activities, including the first Clover HIgh School (CHS) home football game of the season on Friday, Aug. 29.

All high school students, both those from CSD schools and those from visiting schools, must have a school-issued student ID, as well as a ticket, to gain entry to the game. CHS expects to distribute student IDs late next week, just in time for the first game.

Students who do not have a valid high school ID, such as younger students in elementary or middle school, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian above the age of 21. Parents and guardians who bring multiple students without a high school ID will accept full responsibility for any actions taken by the students who entered with them.

Fans planning to travel to away games this season should be aware that similar ID policies have already been implemented in many surrounding school districts.

Students of all ages are not allowed to congregate under the home side bleachers or the picnic area near the scoreboard.

"Four Houses, One Family!"

With that chant, students and staff new to Bethel Elementary stepped up to the spinning wheel to join one of four houses--Altruismo, Amistad, Isibindi or Reveur.

While the exercise feels a bit like the sorting hat at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series, the selection to a house is an important part of the culture at schools using the Ron Clark Academy model. The houses break down the school into smaller groups , creating a close-knit culture .

Each house has a color and theme. Altruismo is the house of givers, and its members wear the color black. Amistad is the house of friendship, and its members wear the color red. Isibindi is the house of courage, and its members wear the color green. Reveur is the house of dreamers, and its members wear the color blue.

Bethel Elementary has a new principal this year, so Mrs. Jennifer Camp excited the crowd when she revealed her blue T-shirt to join Reveur. Superintendent Dr. Sheila Quinn was also invited to take part in the ceremony. She revealed her green T-shirt to join Isibindi.
